For the celebration of 250,000 Pageviews we have Sailor Moon or what has been dubbed Saban Moon. The Sailor Moon that never was, I am doing my part to keep it under wraps.

This is the American version of Sailor Moon (L to R Sai;or Mars (Dana), Sailor Jupiter (Sarah), Sailor Moon (Victoria), Sailor Venus (Kari) and Sailor Mercury (Blue)) this was done before the English dubbed anime. It was originally going to be like the popular Mighty Morphin Power Rangers where there would a live action cast in their civilian lives then switch to the cartoon when they transformed into the Sailor Scouts from the Anime. Then they had brillant to scrap all of the anime and do it with their designs. It had She-Ra Princess of Power. It went through development Hell with only a little pilot which in the version I have seen you can hear people going "what the" and utter disbelief. It was dubbed Saban Moon and here is a blog about it www.moonsisters.org/moonsister… and I agree that it might of work till we see the original.

Some poeple were upset about the redesigns of the title characters. Most are in the realm of Why? I think that upset some was the obvious race conscious changing Sailor Jupiter to an African American godzilla713.deviantart.com/art… and Sailor Venus would have been a Latina. If you are doing a cartoon in the United States we are mixed race country, so it would make sense that the reborn Sailor Scouts would not just be a bunch of white girls. If this set in Iceland then you would not be surprised to see five blonde hair and blue eyes as heroes. My biggest gripe that Luna, the cat advisor for Sailor Moon, was changed from a regular alley cat to a white Persian cat.

I heard that "Saban Moon" was shown to Toei, but Toei turned it down because they said it would cost less to simply dub the anime into English. The company who made Saban Moon was actually not Saban, but an obscure company called Toon Makers. Saban was able to make Power Rangers since Saban was a large company and had the money and the resources to pay for an American adaptation. Toon Makers was a small company, and since their series had both animation and live-action, it definitely would have been expensive. Looking from a business perspective, you could see why Toei rejected Saban Moon in favor of dubbing the anime. I'm pretty sure Naoko Takeuchi is aware of Saban Moon too. I wonder what she thinks of it?

I think that, if they were changing the setting from Japan to the United States, it would make more sense for the Sailor Scouts to be multicultural than for them to all be the same race. The United States is very diverse, unlike Japan which is not. But, you're right, it didn't make sense to change Luna's breed.
